Want to know how to use ChatGPT but nobody explains it from the very first step? This guide is for you. No technical words, no assumptions. From opening the app to writing your first message — in simple English, with Hindi and Bangla tips along the way.
Some guides begin with “as everyone knows, ChatGPT is…”
Not this one.
This guide assumes you have never opened ChatGPT in your life. Maybe you heard the name from a nephew, a news channel, or a WhatsApp forward. Maybe you tried once and got confused by English.
Perfect. Sit with your phone. We will do this together, step by step, the same way I teach the first class at our Habra centre.
What Is ChatGPT? (30-Second Version)
ChatGPT is a free AI assistant. You type a question or request in normal language — it replies like a knowledgeable human. Letters, explanations, ideas, translations, plans — it does them all through simple chat.
That is all you need to know to start. (For the deeper story of AI, read my post AI vs Machine Learning vs Generative AI later.)
How to Use ChatGPT: Step by Step
Step 1: Open the Real ChatGPT (Beware of Fakes!)
Two correct ways:
- On any browser: type chatgpt.com — this is the official website.
- On mobile: open Play Store (Android) or App Store (iPhone) and search “ChatGPT”. Install the app made by OpenAI — check the maker’s name carefully.
Warning: Play Store has many FAKE apps with similar names and logos, full of ads and charges. The real one is by “OpenAI”. If an app asks for payment just to start, it is fake — close it. The real ChatGPT starts free.
Step 2: Sign Up With Your Gmail (2 Minutes)
Tap “Sign up”. Choose “Continue with Google” and select your Gmail. Done — no forms, no payment, no OTP headache.
If you do not have Gmail, make one first (free, 5 minutes) — you will need it for every AI tool anyway.
Step 3: Understand the Screen (It Is Just Like WhatsApp)
The screen has three main things:
- The message box at the bottom — type here, exactly like WhatsApp.
- “New chat” button — starts a fresh conversation for a new topic.
- History list (side menu) — all your old chats are saved there. Nothing gets lost.
If you can use WhatsApp, you already know how to use this screen. That is the honest truth.

Step 4: Send Your First Message
Type anything. Really — anything. Here are first messages my students send, copy any one:
“Explain what you can do for me, in simple English.”
“Mujhe simple Hindi mein batao, tum kya kya kar sakte ho?”
“আমাকে সহজ বাংলায় বলো, তুমি কী কী করতে পারো?”
Press send. Watch the reply appear. Congratulations — you are now officially a ChatGPT user. That was the whole “difficult” part.
Step 5: Continue the Conversation (The Real Secret)
Here is what beginners miss: ChatGPT REMEMBERS the current conversation. You do not need to repeat everything. Just reply like you would to a person:
- “Make it shorter.”
- “Now say the same thing in Bengali.”
- “Give me 2 more options.”
- “Explain point 3 with an example.”
Back-and-forth conversation is how experts use it. One question, one answer, close the app — that is using 10% of its power.
Step 6: Too Much Typing? Use Your Voice
In the mobile app, tap the microphone icon and simply SPEAK your question — Hindi, Bengali, English, mixed — it understands. There is even a voice conversation mode where it talks back like a phone call.
For elders and anyone slow at typing, this feature alone changes everything. I have watched a 55-year-old shop owner have a full spoken conversation with it in Bengali, smiling like a child.
Step 7: Practice Daily With Real Work
The app is learned. Now build the habit. Use it for one REAL task every day — a letter you actually need, a chapter you actually study, a message you actually have to send. Real use builds real skill; random fun questions build nothing.

7 Ready Prompts — Copy and Use Today
- “Write a leave application to my office for 2 days. Reason: family function. Keep it short and formal.”
- “Explain [any topic] like I am a class 8 student. Use one everyday example.”
- “Check this English sentence and correct my mistakes politely: [your sentence]”
- “Make a 7-day study plan for my [exam name]. I can study 2 hours daily.”
- “Write a birthday wish for my friend. Funny but respectful. Give 3 options.”
- “আমার দোকানের জন্য একটা ফেসবুক পোস্ট লিখে দাও। দোকানের নাম: [নাম]। অফার: [অফার]।”
- “Mera resume banane mein help karo. Pehle mujhse zaroori sawal pucho, ek ek karke.”
Notice prompt 7 — asking ChatGPT to ask YOU questions first. That is an advanced trick in one line. When you are ready to write truly powerful prompts, my full method is here: Prompt Engineering for Beginners: 7 Steps.
3 Warnings Before You Go Deeper
Warning 1: It can be confidently wrong. ChatGPT sometimes gives incorrect facts in a very confident tone. Dates, prices, medical matters, legal matters — always verify from a proper source before acting.
Warning 2: Do not share private information. Never type your Aadhaar number, bank details, passwords, or OTPs into ANY chat app, including this one. It does not need them, and no honest service asks for them in chat.
Warning 3: Free version has limits. Use it heavily in one sitting and it may ask you to wait a while. Normal for the free plan — wait, or switch to Gemini meanwhile. (I compared all the options in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini.)

FAQ: How to Use ChatGPT
Is ChatGPT really free?
Yes. The free version is genuinely free and enough for learning and daily work. Paid plans exist for heavy users, but a beginner should not pay anything for months.
Can I use ChatGPT fully in Bengali or Hindi?
Yes — type or speak in Bengali or Hindi and ask it to reply in the same language. You can even mix languages in one message, the way we naturally talk. It manages fine.
Does it work without internet?
No — it needs an internet connection, like WhatsApp or YouTube. Normal mobile data is enough; it does not eat much data.
